Howard County -
Howard County Council and executive candidates have agreed to
partner with a county organization to sponsor a youth summit to
help keep youngsters engaged in positive activities. We
want to make sure they have what they need to interact [with other
teens] positively and to become contributors to their
communities, said the Rev. Carletta Allen, a member of People
Acting Together in Howard, a group of mostly religious
organizations that seeks change through legislation on affordable
housing, youth activities and transportation.
A date for the teen summit has not been set, said Allen, who is
pastor of Locust United Methodist Church in Columbia. Allen
said many residents say plenty of activities for teens are
available in Howard, but some teens say they arent always
accessible. There needs to be better modes of
advertisement to reach youngsters, said Michael Ponce, an Oakland
Mills High School junior and PATH member, in a previous interview
with The Examiner. He also said teens need access to better
modes of transportation to participate in activities. Its
not effective, he said, about the 60-minute wait time for buses.
PATH wants to change the wait time to 30 minutes, which members
say should increase ridership. Council Member Calvin Ball,
D-District 2, said he has long supported issues that are being
addressed by PATH. I strongly support better transportation
in the county, and Ive been advocating that for the last four
years, he said. I also want to make sure we have a more
regional transportation to better serve our residents who commute
to Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
